Basic Information
Ben's Hens has been offering Beyond Organic Pasture-Raised Lamb since 2022. Since day one, our goal has been to provide a real, whole, quality, and nutrient-dense Lamb. We have gone through a few different iterations to determine what works best to raise Lamb in our context. It has been a challenge, but we are very close to achieving the Lamb we set out to produce.
The breeds of Sheep we choose to raise are Dorper (Primary) and American Blackbelly (Secondary). Both are considered Hair Sheep (NOT Wool), therefore, they naturally shed their hair without the need to sheer them. Because our Sheep have Hair, as opposed to Wool, they do NOT produce Lanolin (wool wax, wool grease, or wool yolk). Lanolin is the primary cause of the unpleasant, gamey, or greasy taste and the smell often associated with Meat from Wool Sheep Breeds. Therefore, our Lamb has a mild flavor and taste.
We practice Regenerative Agriculture and choose to Pasture-Raise all our Sheep. We do our best to mimic nature and work with nature in a delicate balance by Rotationally Grazing our Sheep. In order to accomplish this, we move them every 4 - 7 days, depending on the current circumstances. In addition, our Sheep are NOT medicated.
