Basic Information
Ben's Hens has been offering Beyond Organic Pasture-Raised Pork since 2024. Since day one, our goal has been to provide a real, whole, quality, and nutrient-dense Pork. We have gone through a few different iterations to determine what works best to raise Pigs in our context. It has been a challenge, but each year, we get closer to achieving the Pork we set out to produce.
We are still determining what breeds will work best for our context. To start out, we simply looked for a Pig with 4 legs and a tail. We hope to produce both Meat and Lard for our Members. This is a work in progress, but so far, we have be blessed with some wonderful product.
We practice Regenerative Agriculture and choose to Pasture-Raise all our Pigs. We do our best to mimic nature and work with nature in a delicate balance by Rotationally Grazing our Pigs. In order to accomplish this, we move them every 7 - 10 days, depending on the current circumstances. Because we rely on others for Piglets, we can't control what medications they may use. However, once they are our in our possession, we do NOT medicate our Pigs.
Base Value Information
Value = Represents the fundamental, intrinsic worth of our products based on their ability to generated future benefits and utility for the accepter. Correlates to the redemption of points from your Member Balance.
The Base Value is based on the average cost to raise one Pig to Harvest Ready. Because we Pasture-Raise our Pigs and feed them unconventionally, it takes 3 to 4 additional months to have our Pigs Harvest Ready, compared to conventionally raise Pigs. This means more feed and labor is required.
Harvest Ready Pig (Base Value): $1,200
$625 | Feed, Water, and Minerals.
$400 | Labor
$150 | Cost of Piglet
$25 | Maintenance / Other
The numbers above are provided for those interested in purchasing a live Pig. Our cost to raise will be different than others. Our context is different.
For those looking to have a Pig Harvested and Butchered, it will depend on the Butcher you select. The anticipated amount would be: $300 - $350 per Pig for Harvest, Cut, and Wrap by the Butcher of your choosing.
In addition, we would required $20 for Harvest Day Preparation and Assistance.
Feed Information
Our Pigs have full access to our Pastures; therefore, pasture grasses and vegetation are available during the growing season.
Unlike Ruminants (cows, sheep, and goats), the digestive tract of a Pig is adapted for the consumption of grains and seeds. Therefore, the primary food source we provide consists of the following:
Whole Grain / Seed Mix | Usually about 45% of the total feed.
This mix is our base feed and contains the following: Barley, Red Wheat, Oats, Milo, Millett, Sunflower, Safflower, and Green Peas. This mix is ground and then soaked in water. Less mix in the early months, but more mix in the later months.
Conventional 24% Protein Corn and Soy Mash | Usually about 45% of the total feed.
We wish we didn't need the Mash, but over the years, we have discovered that we need it to produce good, positive growth in the early months. More Mash in the early months, but less Mash in the later months.
Mash Concentrate 38% Protein | Usually about 10% of the total feed.
In order to meet the required Protein levels, we add a Concentrate to our mix. The Protein is primarily from Flax Seed. This concentrate contains a variety of Vitamins and Minerals. Whatever isn't absorbed by the Pigs, is pooped out and added to the soil.
In the early months, the feed is heavy on Mash and light on our Mix. This allows for good, positive growth.
During the later months, when they are putting on Fat, we switch it to heavy on Mix and light on Mash. We believe this allows for less absorption of the negative Soy and Corn Oil.
In addition, because Pigs are omnivores, they receive poultry by-products after we process Ben's Hens Poultry. They also receive tables scraps and garden vegatables.
